AN EVENING PACKED WITH SURPRISES The Golden Globes Kick Off the 2025 Awards Season

By Gilda Baum-Lappe

and Sandy Rodriguez

The 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards, hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, the first solo female host in the history of this event, celebrated the best in film and television at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.

We arrived early to cover the red carpet and bring you images of Hollywood superstars such as Hugh Grant, Amy Adams, Harrison Ford, Elle Fanning, Ted Danson, Angelina Jolie, Jesse Eisenberg, Adam Sandler, and Jake Gyllenhaal, which you can view here and on Instagram at @heartofhollywoodmagazine

Many female celebrities chose gowns in striking shades. Gold was certainly trending, as shown by the outfits worn by Demi Moore and Mikey Madison. Cate Blanchet’s gold Louis Vuitton dress was one she had previously worn for the Cannes film festival in 2024. Zendaya opted for a burnt orange silk gown. Karla Sofia Gascon wore an orange dress as well and explained that hers was similar to the robes worn by Buddhist monks. Nicole Kidman and Angelina Jolie dazzled in metallics. Glenn Close looked very chic in a black ensemble covered in writing, which she told Gilda was from Balmain. Miley Cyrus and Sophia Vergara were also in black, along with Pamela Anderson, whose natural beauty shone through since she doesn’t wear makeup anymore and sticks to more demure outfits.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo set aside pink and green, their signature colors during the time they were promoting Wicked, in favor of pale gold and a combination of black and silver, the colors of their respective gowns.

Melissa McCarthy.

Melissa McCarthy was in a hot pink jumpsuit and looked like a flower. Comedian Nikki Glaser said the evening was “Ozempic’s biggest night”, and whether Melissa has relied on this type of product or not is her own business, but her dramatic weight loss was evident.

While waiting for the ceremony to begin, Gilda spoke with popular director Ryan Murphy about a topic that has caused a lot of speculation online— whether he would consider bringing the story of health insurance CEO killer Luigi Mangione to the screen. Ryan implied he’s not disregarding the possibility.

Gilda then chatted with famed chef and restaurateur Nobu Matsuhisa, once again the official chef for the event, who had created a truly indulgent menu using ingredients such as king crab, caviar, salmon, and gold flakes.

In addition to the actual celebrities, two interesting people caught the eye of attendees. Maxwell Braunstein, winner of a Glen Powell lookalike contest, and Miles Mitchell, winner of a Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest, walked the red carpet and got to take pictures with the real Glen and Timothée. The doppelgängers had already gone viral online and this time they got a taste of real-life fame as they walked the red carpet. Each one was holding a sign saying “I won a lookalike contest and now I’m at the Golden Globes”, a fun touch that made people smile.

Moet & Chandon, the official champagne of the Golden Globes, was handed out in mini bottles by attentive servers. Dressed in red, they certainly have the looks to break into movies and this was quite the opportunity for them to be seen by decisionmakers in the industry.

Squeals of excitement, celebrities catching up with their friends and colleagues, a flurry of gorgeous dresses that will help cement new fashion trends, champagne toasts, shiny jewelry— all of this was part of what we saw on the red carpet. Then, the ceremony took place.

Some of the evening’s winners were rather unexpected. For instance, controversial movie Emilia Perez defeated Wicked to win Best Picture — Musical or Comedy. The Brutalist dominated the drama categories and is the Best Motion Picture – Drama. It has a runtime of roughly three and a half hours, so make sure to set aside enough time to enjoy it.

Karla Sofía Gascón.

TV series Shogun took home awards for all four categories it was nominated for, including Best Television Series – Drama. Fernanda Torres became the first Brazilian to win the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture — Drama for I’m Still Here

Demi Moore did an excellent job in The Substance, but because of her fierce competition, Gilda and Sandy were surprised that Demi Moore won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Demi herself was even more surprised. She gave a very moving speech, in which she claimed to be in shock, since her career started over 45 years ago and she had never received an award for her acting before.

We had the opportunity to hear some of the winners answer questions and ask some of our own. Gilda was happy to see the cast of Baby Reindeer, recognized as Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television. Sandy, in turn, was excited to interact with Romanian actor Sebastian Stan, Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for A Different Man. Sebastian is a highly versatile actor, having played people as varied as The Winter Soldier and Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee. Sandy asked what Sebastian’s most challenging role to date had been. He replied that playing Donald Trump in The Apprentice, because it was a big risk and very difficult in itself.

Sebastian Stan.

As we were leaving the event we came across many other celebrities, such as nominee Mikey Madison. We enjoyed her performance in Anora, an R-rated modern Cinderella story with unexpected plot twists.

It was the perfect ending to an evening packed with surprises.
