Creating a Supportive Haven for Alzheimer's Caregivers

By Billy Montgomery

Life-changing moments can abruptly alter one's course. For Dominique "Pinky" Ainsworth, a vibrant millennial with dreams as expansive as the digital age she belongs to, such a moment arrived when her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease a few years ago.

Ainsworth's journey began like any other millennial's – navigating the complexities of adulthood, pursuing career aspirations, and relishing the freedom of an interconnected world. However, life had different plans for her when her mother, once the beacon of strength and guidance, started showing signs of memory loss.

“It was very challenging.  It started with (her making) accusations of me stealing from her and things like that,” Ainsworth said.  “I took those things very personally instead of realizing that this was the beginning of a transition of my mom becoming a totally different person that I was used to.”

Ainsworth said the diagnosis plunged her into a world she never anticipated.   Yet, amidst the uncertainty, a resilient spirit within her emerged. Rather than succumbing to despair, Ainsworth decided to channel her emotions into a purpose larger than herself.  This decision led to the creation of an Alzheimer's support organization that would become a beacon of hope for countless families facing similar struggles.

Motivated to make a meaningful impact, Ainsworth founded Puzzled Minds, an organization dedicated to providing support, resources, and advocacy for those affected by Alzheimer's. The journey wasn't easy; Ainsworth faced obstacles common to many young entrepreneurs, from fundraising challenges to establishing credibility in a field dominated by seasoned professionals.

“I started to feel empowered. I realized that I can be the change,” Ainsworth said.  “Maybe it is not meant for me to be the healer but the shift of change for others going through similar experiences.” Ainsworth envisioned Puzzled Minds, as a comprehensive approach that went beyond traditional avenues, recognizing the need for emotional support, educational resources, and a community that understood the unique challenges Alzheimer's presented.

The organization's flagship initiative in June 2023 presenting a support group for caregivers, offering a safe space for them to share experiences, insights, and coping strategies.  Recognizing the importance of emotional well-being, Puzzled Minds collaborated with mental health professionals to provide counseling services tailored to the specific needs of those navigating the Alzheimer's journey.

“Throughout my journey, I've collected so many different resources that have helped me and I just want to share that with the community,” Ainsworth said. In addition to emotional support, Ainsworth recognized the importance of education in empowering families facing Alzheimer's. in its first event, Puzzled Minds featured experts in caregiving.  The event not only disseminated valuable information but also fostered a sense of community among attendees, helping them realize they were not alone in their struggles.

“Many people don’t realize that there’s help out here, so they suffer in silence,” Ainsworth said.

The journey from a daughter grappling with her mother's diagnosis to the founder of a globally recognized Alzheimer's support organization transformed Ainsworth in profound ways. She discovered strengths within herself that she never knew existed and forged connections with individuals who shared her passion for making a difference.

In the face of Alzheimer's, Ainsworth chose not to be a passive observer of her family's fate but an active force for positive change. Her journey exemplifies the transformative impact of turning personal pain into collective purpose, proving that even the seemingly insurmountable challenges of diseases like Alzheimer's can be met with hope, resilience, and a community united in the pursuit of a better future.
