CREATING MOODS WITH MUSIC

Steve Pradd’s Company Provides Original Music Scores for Films, Shows, and More

Steve Pradd is a multitalented film and TV composer who has studied at some of the most prestigious musical institutions in the world, such as Berklee College of Music, University of Southern California (USC), University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and The Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program.

In the Fall of 2021, Steve started a Los Angeles-based music production company titled Pradd Film & TV Scoring LLC. Steve is the managing member of his company and provides the unique service of composing high quality original music for studio motion pictures, independent films, television shows or series, videogames, advertising, TV commercials, film trailers, and any other media that requires an original music score.

What motivated you to become a musician and composer?

I started playing saxophone at eight years of age. Besides learning how to read music as a child, I also watched a lot of television. So I started playing what I heard on TV and radio, and playing along with jazz records, by ear. So I guess you can say that I was subconsciously drawn to film and TV music early on. I had no idea film scoring was a profession at that time. I just wanted to be cool and play things that were familiar to my friends and family. When I look back on it, I think it’s kind of funny.

What are some of the projects that you are currently working on?

At the moment, I am committed to three projects. Two of them are films and the last will be either a feature film, a web series, or a limited series.

Is there a particular genre of music that you like to or enjoy to compose?

I believe that as a film composer, you have to be able to write for multiple genres. As for a particular story, a good story would be my preference.

How do you decide what music project to take?

If it’s a good story and the story needs to be told, I’m all in. I feel very fortunate to be in a profession that requires constant collaboration and consummate storytelling.

What was the most challenging time in your career and how did you overcome it?

The most challenging time in my career is now! I hope it remains that way for my entire career. In fact, each and every project will present its own set of unique challenges. Overcoming challenges is an occupational hazard when you are a film composer. Funny but true!

You have worked in different countries and experienced different cultures. How do you think that visiting these places affected your artistic career?

When I’ve visited other countries and met people from different cultures, I’ve made it a point to find out more about the individual and the region they come from. I served in the military for some time and more often than not, I find a great deal of common ground to explore. If you learn about a country’s food, music, art, and traditions, you will find similarities. I try to keep in mind that this can be positive or negative, depending on your own individual viewpoint. This mindset has enhanced me artistically.

As a musician, what influenced you the most to create something new?

I create something new on every project I’ve ever worked on. The trick is to evoke similar emotions and mood in a film by using different means.

What would you like to share in this magazine that you have never shared before?

I’m just a kid at heart, looking for the next exciting adventure to go on.
