At BRT Interior Design, founder Beatrice Tokayer is on a mission to transform homes and businesses by creating spaces that cater to the sensory preferences of individuals and families. Her unique approach combines functionality, beauty, and sensory health to deliver spaces where everyone can feel truly comfortable. Beatrice’s journey into sensory-friendly interior design began with a deeply personal experience. While studying at the Institute of Art and Design in New York, with additional training in color psychology and sensory integration, Beatrice’s interest in sensory design was ignited when her middle son was diagnosed with ADHD and sensory processing disorder (SPD). As a mother, she recognized her son’s struggles with sleep, social interactions, and academic challenges. This turning point led her to explore how physical spaces could help children and adults alike live calmer, healthier lives.
Unlike traditional interior design, sensory-friendly spaces consider how the physical environment impacts an individual’s sensory system. Beatrice emphasizes that sensory preferences play a crucial role in how we interact with our spaces. By making intentional design choices — whether it’s using dimmable lights, soft fabrics, or minimalistic layouts — Beatrice ensures that every space she designs supports sensory health and overall well-being. This approach is particularly important for families with members who have autism, ADHD, or SPD, but it can also benefit anyone looking for a more peaceful and balanced home environment.

BRT Interior Design is known for its thoughtful attention to how a room looks and feels. The goal isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating functional spaces that allow individuals to relax, focus, or play without being overwhelmed by their surroundings. For Beatrice, no two clients are the same, and each project begins with a consultation to learn about the specific sensory preferences of everyone in the household. From there, she tailors her designs to ensure that all sensory needs — whether they involve sound, light, texture, or layout — are met. It’s not just homes that benefit from sensory-friendly design. Businesses are also starting to recognize the value of creating sensory-sensitive environments for employees and customers alike. Beatrice has worked with several business owners to create offices, retail spaces, and clinics that cater to the sensory needs of both staff and visitors.
As she continues to expand BRT Interior Design, Beatrice remains focused on her passion: creating spaces that are not only visually stunning but also functional and comfortable for people with sensory preferences. Her work is a testament to the transformative power of thoughtful design, offering an exciting new direction in interior design for families and businesses alike.
