Discover Designer Maria Mauro’s Unique Creations

Maria Mauro is a creative fashion designer. Using crochet, knits, and fabric, she creates luxurious one-of-a-kind designs for those special events when the wearer wants to express individuality without saying a word.

“My creations will speak and will send a message of fearless confidence and resilience. My market is resort wear, but you can be the judge of that, since I feel my dresses can also be worn by Jennifer Lopez for a red carpet event or by Mrs. Michelle Obama for an interview with Oprah”, the designer says.

Why did you decide to choose fashion design as a career?

I chose fashion design because I'm naturally creative, and this is a creative outlet for me. Crochet was a skill I mastered at a young age. I guess I could have been a great painter, piano player, or origami maker if I had been exposed to learning those skills, but since I only had yarn, needles, and fabric at my disposal, I mastered the art of crochet. We will always do with what we have. I am very proud of this skill for it brings balance and beauty to my life and the life of others.

What advice would you give to young designers just starting out and hoping to make it in the industry?

Create as many lines as you can in your head. Jot all your ideas down in your special notebook, along with sketches, color themes, materials, inspirations, and potential audience. Once you do this, you will have selective attention as you go through everyday life. For example, I have exposed four lines to the world. The second line, which I showed in Paris, was created with pop tabs. In my view, using pop tabs meant that anyone could make their dreams come true, and even pop tabs would do, for if there is a will, there will always be a way. Another idea was meant to save the monarch butterfly. I created 12 dresses which represented different butterflies. This line was exhibited in New York.

Currently, I am working on a line called Romance, with princess dresses made out of crochet and fabric.

I also have a site named Maria-Mauro.com that I'm trying to revive; during the pandemic I put it on the backburner but I haven’t lost hope that it will be a hit once it gets the correct exposure.
