Documentary Short, ‘DAVID AGAIN’ Starring Jon Cryer Explores Recovery and the Power of Friendship Set to Premiere at Tribeca 2024
Director Adam Elliott of C Minus Productions, in Association with Inwood Art Works proudly announces the New York premiere of David Again, which has been selected for the Short Documentary Program of the famed Tribeca Festival. Premiering June 6, 2024 at the AMC East 19th Street East 6 Theater (890 Broadway, NY, NY) at 8:15pm, David Again tells the true New York story of David Dennis, his road to recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, and his lifelong friendship with actor Jon Cryer. Mr. Dennis served as an early artistic inspiration for Cryer, most notably for his breakout character of “Duckie” from Pretty in Pink. Cryer also wrote and produced a film about his friendship with Mr. Dennis, the 1998 independent feature, Went to Coney Island on a Mission from God…Be Back by Five, all of which is chronicled in the documentary through interviews with both men.
Elliott met Mr. Dennis as next-door neighbors. Taken by his unique sense of style, candor, wit and desire to share his life story, Elliott asked Mr. Dennis if he could profile him for a film. David was thrilled at the prospect of sharing his story, as he felt doing so may help others facing similar struggles with addiction. Sadly, Mr. Dennis didn’t live to see the completion of David Again, having passed away from natural causes during production. Encouraged by David’s family and Mr. Cryer to finish the project, Elliott’s film serves as a tribute to David’s life, exploring the power of friendship, and offering the promise that it is never too late to ask for help or to ask for forgiveness.
“David was really excited about this film. I think it’s because he saw the film as a continuation of providing service, something he was deeply committed to in his own recovery. Helping David share his story has been the greatest honor of my creative life. I am deeply grateful to David for having trusted me, and to have known such a unique spirit.” commented director, Adam Elliott.

Actor Jon Cryer added, “Last year, filmmaker Adam Elliott contacted me out of the blue. He was making a documentary short about a very charismatic neighbor of his and he wanted to portray his friend’s journey to sobriety. That neighbor was my oldest friend, David Dennis, but David and I had become estranged. His drug use had spiraled to a point where the toll it was taking on his family had become too difficult for me to be in proximity of. Four years ago, I was surprised to hear that he had found real help, community and purpose in Alcoholics Anonymous. We reestablished contact and were able to mend fences. I agreed to shoot an interview for Adam, and David and I were really looking forward to reminiscing onscreen together. My relationship with David had been an enormous influence on my life and work. We set a date. But unfortunately, it didn’t go how we planned. The resulting film is both less than we imagined, and much, much more. As a New Yorker, born and bred myself, and as the city was utterly a part of David’s soul, I couldn’t be more proud and happy that it will be screening in the Tribeca Film Festival. I hope audiences will come, and also come to know the extraordinary person David was.”
David Again will have its red carpet premiere on June 6, 2024, at AMC East 19th St. (East 6 Theater), 890 Broadway, New York, NY at 8:15pm. Jon Cryer will be in attendance.
