Grief In Reverse

By Batista Gremaud

Grieving when you lose something or someone precious can be challenging to cope with, especially if you feel you didn't have enough time with the person or subject.

Research has shown that physical exercise is an excellent tool for dealing with emotional pain and has many health benefits, such as preventing diseases and lowering mortality rates. Also, it can help fight depression and stabilize moods and behaviors.

Exercise is known to stimulate the release of healthy neurochemicals, endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin. These brain chemicals are responsible for your happiness, relieve pain, ease stress, and assist people in dealing with anxiety, panic attacks, and even PTSD.

Emotional and Physical Well-being are Interconnected

A weakened physical condition leads a person to become more responsive to their emotional state, which dictates their actions. So when a tragedy strikes, they have little defense against the terrible sadness or guilt they experience.

The weakness of infancy gives way to strength and independence as we grow up. However, our strength gradually diminishes as we age, and many lose personal autonomy and physicality. Life is a cycle of these ups and downs. Strength, at any age beyond infancy, is essential to slowing down the aging process and maintaining the quality of life., physically and emotionally.

Losing muscle mass is not an option.

The average adult loses approximately 10% of their muscle mass per decade if they do not engage in regular strength-building activities. So if their peak performance were once 100%, it would gradually decrease to 80%, 60%, and below 50%, which is very common.

Talking to a therapist, with someone, or walking can help significantly overcome grief. But the fact remains that you will be in a quicksand of tears more often and for longer when you don't increase your physical strength.

Similarly, keeping a healthy musculature protects against falls by giving you better balance as you age and can prevent injuries. In addition, those who are more robust and healthier recover faster if they sustain an unforeseen injury.

Working out with weights is the best way to increase your strength and maintain healthy musculature and bone mass because it enables your muscles to grow and strengthen by working against an opposing force.

A word of caution: It is critical to understand that not all exercise modalities are created equal, and some could seriously be counterproductive to the recovery process by putting unnecessary stress on the nervous system, joints, tendons, and ligaments.

To heal, the body needs to be supported by a solid foundation. I will illustrate my point with a metaphor.

The Three Little Pigs

We all know the story of the three little pigs, right? The first pig built his house with straw, the second used sticks, the third one was smarter, and even though it required more patience and work, he built his house with bricks. When the big bad wolf came and huffed and puffed, he blew down both houses made of straw and sticks, only the house made of bricks held up.

And so it is with the human body. Most people address their fitness regimen without a plan and understanding the crucial importance of building a solid foundation, which means addressing issues such as restoring proper postural alignment, strengthening the nervous system, and correcting muscle and structural imbalances.

The Gym: Where You Can Get Stronger Faster

Gyms are a great place to safely increase your strength, as various equipment can be adjusted to support your body and help you work out safely. With a sound, thought-out workout plan, you can quickly increase your strength by 15 percent in a single session, which has a direct impact on strengthening your emotions.

Gyms have invested in equipment that makes your workout comfortable and efficient. They provide a safe and healthy environment to thrive. However, if you are still using treadmills, simply taking a walk for exercise, or doing Yoga, you are overlooking the remarkable and accelerated benefits of strength training. Strength training is a stand-alone activity that offers unique advantages not found in other modalities.

While some people avoid going to the gym, others find it a source of strength and community. No matter someone's fitness goals, they can find others at the gym facing similar challenges and working to improve their physical and mental health.

Gyms are where you meet people in wheelchairs who have lost limbs, have conditions like lupus or epilepsy, or are recovering from diseases and surgeries. Yet, they are working out, making no excuses…they are gaining strength…and easing grief!

Dr Fitness USA THE SHOW, making its debut on Thursday, January 19th, 2023, takes pride in giving a voice to those who overcame tragedies.

The first episode highlights a young 34-year-old lady pilot. She shares her journey as the lone survivor of a fatal plane crash. But, when her medical doctors told her she would never walk again, she proved that she would do more than that: she would dance again.

The plane crash broke every extremity, threatening to destroy everything she had worked for. Her journey brought her through paralysis, multiple surgeries, and accident investigations. Yet, for her, mediocrity is synonymous with failure, and limits must be redefined and conquered.

Choose Happiness, Practice Self-Love

Choosing to be happy is more than just saying, "I'm happy!" It requires being proactive and taking care of all areas of your life, starting from the inside out with self-love. Without self-love, there can be no love.

There is no greater self-love than giving yourself the time and space to keep yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally strong.
