Film Festival Producer Eric Vollweiler’s Advice for Those Hoping to Follow in His Footsteps
Eric Vollweiler is a widely-known and respected film festival and entertainment event producer and marketing consultant. He has, for instance, being the producer of the Saratoga Springs International Film Festival, the marketing and advertising consultant for the Buffalo Niagara International Film Festival, and the marketing specialist for the Artemis Woman in Action Film Festival.
What is your overall philosophy for leading an organization?
Being passionate and loving the work I do.
What personality traits, skills, and education do you think all event planners/producers must have?
They must be able to communicate with honesty and integrity, understand the audience they are targeting and the demographics of this audience, and work hard.
What inspired you to become a film festival producer?
I learned through my internship and volunteer work during my college years that film festivals were a place to honor filmmakers and actors, and this knowledge led me to loving what I did for the last 18 years.
Can you share some of your challenges while producing an event?
Each film festival and event is different. When fundraising, the sums can end up different. Also, sometimes motivating myself to make more calls can be challenging. Another thing that can create a challenge is not researching other events in the area that are taking place during the same time as yours. Sometimes, when working on a film festival, if the communication is not solid with the festival director, there can also be challenges when creating a successful film festival.

What is your approach to making big-picture decisions?
When festival directors ask me to make big decisions, I will research the opportunity being asked.
What's your dream, your ultimate goal? Do you feel like you're on the path to this goal, or do you feel as if you already achieved that dream?
I want to volunteer more with inner city children in the arts. No matter if the focus is acting, filmmaking, singing, or dancing, I believe these forms of art provide a safe place for these kids to express themselves.
Do you have any upcoming events?
I have the Haydenfilms 1.0 Screenwriting Competition and the Independent Filmmaker Day, both in January of 2022.
What is your message for the ones that want to follow your footsteps?
No matter if you go to a college or not. I would reach out to potential mentors in the field where you want to work. Also, internships are so important. As an event producer and a marketing consultant in the entertainment industry, I also was involved in theater and music festivals. Understanding other genres of events is important, as is finding the relationships between all events, and learning the demographics of the audiences who will be attending the events you are working on.
