Katishma Grey: From Ballroom Dance to Black Hollywood, A Journey of Passion and Perseverance

By Tammy Reese

Katishma Grey’s career is anything but ordinary. From her early days transforming wedding dances at Arthur Murray’s Dance Studio to becoming a dynamic force in the world of TV, film, and theater, Katishma has proven that talent, grit, and a relentless drive can pave the way to success. As she continues to break new ground in Atlanta’s Black Hollywood, Katishma shares her journey — one that’s as diverse as it is inspiring. Whether she’s in front of the camera, behind it, or directing a stage play, Katishma’s passion for storytelling shines through, making her a name to watch in the entertainment industry.

What initially drew you to the world of dance, acting, and entertainment? What keeps you motivated to stick with it?

From a young age, I was captivated by the power of storytelling, movement, and expression. Dance was my first love — it gave me a voice when words fell short. As I grew older, I discovered acting and realized how the two forms of art could blend to create something truly magical. What keeps me motivated is the impact that these forms of art can have on others. Whether it’s inspiring someone, helping them see the world differently, or simply providing an escape, the ability to touch lives keeps me going. I feel that acting and directing are God’s assignment to me as I prove with my testimony and crazy roller coaster of life experience, that you are NEVER walking alone. God’s love prioritizes you and I am the living breathing evidence of that truth.

How did your role at Redhouse Arts and the Performing Arts Fellowship impact your growth as an artist?

Working at Redhouse Arts was transformative. As a building lead and choreographer, casting assistant, director of children’s theater productions, I gained a deeper understanding of what it takes to bring a production to life, from the ground up. It wasn’t just about performing — it was about creating an environment where everyone, from the cast to the crew, could thrive. The Performing Arts Fellowship pushed me out of my comfort zone and challenged me to develop skills in areas I hadn’t explored deeply before, like directing. Both experiences allowed me to grow not just as a performer, but as a well-rounded artist.

Can you discuss your experiences working on high-profile TV shows such as “Wu-Tang: An American Saga” and “New Amsterdam”?

Working on shows like “Wu-Tang: An American Saga” and “New Amsterdam” was exhilarating. These productions were on such a large scale, and the level of talent involved was inspiring. On “Wu-Tang,” I got to step into a world that was gritty, real, and steeped in history, which was an incredible experience as an actor. “New Amsterdam” inspired me to keep going as the professionalism and dedication of everyone on set pushed me to elevate myelf and my goals every day.

How did your iconic portrayal of a Black Panther rifle woman in the music video for H.E.R.’s Oscar-winning song come about, and what was the experience like?

Portraying a Black Panther rifle woman in H.E.R.’s music video was a powerful experience. The experience was both intense and rewarding. It wasn’t just about playing a role; it was about embodying a movement and honoring those who fought for our rights and freedoms. The energy on set was palpable, and I felt a deep responsibility to get it right.

How do you balance your roles in front of and behind the camera, and what do you find most fulfilling about each?

Balancing roles in front of and behind the camera is all about time management and passion. Each role requires a different part of my creativity and energy. Acting allows me to lose myself in a character and tell a story from within, while working behind the camera, directing, gives me a broader perspective on how all the pieces fit together to create that story. Both are incredibly fulfilling, but in different ways. Acting is intimate and personal, while directing is collaborative and expansive.

As you aim to take over Atlanta’s Black Hollywood, what are your goals for the future, and how do you plan to achieve them?

My goals are to continue building my presence in the industry, both as an actor and as a creative force behind the scenes. I want to bring unique, powerful stories to life that resonate with diverse audiences. To achieve this, I’m focusing on networking within the Atlanta community, seeking out meaningful projects, and continually honing my craft. I also plan to use The Breuklyn Luxe, my boutique, as a creative hub for collaboration and inspiration.

What advice would you give to aspiring dancers, actors, and directors who look up to you and your multifaceted career?

My advice is to stay curious, stay humble, and never stop learning. The entertainment industry is constantly evolving, and it’s important to evolve with it. Embrace every opportunity, even the ones that seem small — they all contribute to your growth. Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and try new things. Most importantly, stay true to who you are and the stories you want to tell. Your unique voice is your greatest asset.

Beautiful woman with amazing talent. Can’t wait to see what’s next for Katishma. My take away from this article is when she says to stay true to who you are and to embrace every opportunity. That can be the catalyst for any and every dream and/or goal anyone of us have.
