What inspired you to start writing?
Unmasking the PAIN Within was inspired by the hurt and pain built up inside of me. I would wake up in the middle of the night in tears. The only way I could go back to sleep was to start writing my thoughts down, writing about past abuse in a journal.
How does your work at P.A.I.N. (Prevent Abuse In Neighborhoods) relate to your books?
P.A.I.N. prevents abuse in neighborhoods. It helps others overcome and move on after being victims of abuse, and then becoming survivors. My first book, Unmasking the PAIN Within, is my personal story. U Can 2 Overcome and Move On is my story and that of 10 others who are survivors of domestic violence.
What does your family think of your writing?
My family is proud of me for realizing I could have lived feeling sorry for myself or angry at others, but instead I healed and forgave. I am filled with joy and I help others. I decided to turn a bad situation into something positive.
What is the most difficult part about writing for you?
The most difficult part about writing the first two books was thinking about the past, the hurt and the pain.
How do you deal with the emotional impact of a book on yourself as you are writing the story?
Believe it or not, the emotional part is part of the healing process. That is why as a motivational speaker I encourage everyone going through pain to write it down.
Can you share something about your next book with us?
My third book, CaliOkie, is about a born and raised in Okalahoma and the secrets of working in Hollywood. It’s about taking my own advice to overcome and move on.
What is the key message in the book?
It’s never too late to start over.
Do you have anything special that you’ll be focusing on throughout 2021?
Have a positive attitude to get positive results.
