Daniela Rodriguez-Firmani, CEO and Co-Founder of Neems Jeans, spoke with Heart Of Hollywood Magazine about the company and the unique garments it offers.
What inspired the idea of offering customized bespoke jeans at an affordable price point? When did you start your company?
Neems was born out of the frustration with finding jeans that actually fit my proportions properly. After a lifelong struggle with the jean-shopping experience, my co-founder Andre and I had a lightbulb moment back in late 2018. We decided to design jeans made to fit people, not the other way around.
From the very beginning of Neems, we knew we wanted to make our custom jeans as accessible as we possibly could while also staying true to our quality and our ethical practices. In theory, we could easily price our custom jeans at a higher price point, given that they are each custom-made and manufactured in Los Angeles, which is obviously very expensive. However, our goal has always been to make Neems priced relatively similar to other premium denim brands, with our competitive advantage of being made in L.A. and custom-made to your body for a perfect fit.
Why do you focus on jeans specifically instead of another type of garment?
Jeans are highly notorious for being one of the hardest garments to fit well on different body shapes and sizes. This is based on personal experience as well as our extensive customer research. We decided to focus on jeans first since we knew this was the biggest opportunity to tackle. However, we do plan on expanding to other custom-made garments, including trousers and chinos.

Could you walk me through the process of ordering and receiving a pair of customized jeans?
There are three steps to ordering and receiving a pair of custom jeans. The first step is to customize your jeans to your unique preferences on our website; you select your style, wash, length, and rise for your jeans, and finally place your order. The second step is to get measured by accessing the mobile body scanner on our website. This mobile body scanner takes a front and side picture of you to obtain your body measurements; it takes five minutes total! And the third step is to receive your custom jeans in two weeks and wear them nonstop!
How do you ensure timely delivery of orders, considering each pair is customized?
We are extremely proud of our quick turnaround time of just two weeks for a pair of custom jeans; most of our competitors take four to six weeks. We have been able to achieve this timely delivery by manufacturing locally in Los Angeles, which allows us to cut out the lengthy shipping times when manufacturing abroad. In addition, we have built an extremely efficient supply chain over the years across every step of the jean-making process, from designing to cutting to sewing to washing.
What are the biggest challenges Neems Jeans faces in the current market, and how do you plan to address them?
The biggest challenge Neems currently faces is building our brand; this has been especially difficult since we have been purely online since we started. We strongly feel that building that in-person relationship with the consumer is so important to infuse identity into our company outside of the digital world. We are planning on creating in-person experiences in late 2024 and early 2025, where customers can engage with us and experience Neems IRL in a memorable way!

What are the current trends in denim and which ones can we expect in the near future?
Within the denim industry, we are seeing a shift towards denim with fun designs and creative embroidery. We are actually working on introducing some embroidery in the near future ourselves. Stay tuned!
How do you like to style your own jeans? What tops or shoes do you like to wear with them for casual occasions or for slightly more formal ones?
I am a pretty simple dresser and like to keep my outfits minimalistic! What I love about jeans is that they are super versatile and can be dressed up or down. For casual occasions, I like to wear a pair of high-rise, wide-leg jeans with a graphic tee and a pair of white sneakers. For a slightly more formal look, I would switch the graphic tee for a nice flowy blouse and wear a pair of comfy high heels.
What would you consider one of the highlights in your career?
The biggest highlight of my career is without a doubt receiving emails from customers saying how much they love their custom jeans. One recent moment that stands out to me is when a 67- year-old customer emailed me, saying that Neems changed her life, because this was the very first time she had ever had a pair of jeans that actually fit. There is no better feeling than knowing that a company you created has had such a profound effect on people.

What issues do you feel the average individual encounters when trying to find well-fitting jeans off the rack?
The biggest issue is definitely sizing inconsistency across brands, and even within the same brand. This issue is prevalent for both men and women alike. Everyone has probably had the confusing experience where you are one size in one brand, and then a completely different size in another brand, and so forth. This is often due to vanity sizing. Vanity sizing is the practice of some brands that purposefully assign their clothes smaller sizes than they actually are, in order to give customers an ego boost. The inconsistency is not only extremely frustrating, but has also been shown to negatively impact self-esteem and body image.
