By Tammy Reese

Skilled is a new documentary film from 3M that celebrates the modern skilled trade workforce through the eyes of inspiring individuals who break the mold while pursuing the careers of their dreams. The film features four trade workers—a plumber, fall protection specialist, welder, and film gaffer—at various stages in their careers, highlighting the exciting and meaningful opportunities offered within the trades. The film will be available on 3M.com/Skilled and YouTube.com/3M after the premiere event and will be released wide on VOD in Spring 2023.

On Sunday, January 22, 2023 Actress, Producer, Director, Author, and Philanthropist Vivica A. Fox hosted the “Skilled” Red Carpet Premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

Those in attendance included Documentary Subjects Cedric Smith (Welder), Paige Knowles (Plumber), Sophia Stieglitz (Grip & Electrical Team), Andrea Martin, (3M Fall Protection Specialist), Julio Palacio (Director), Christine Arena (Producer), Dr. Jayshree Seth (3M’s Chief Science Advocate) and Vivica A. Fox (Actress/Producer), Sanju J. Patel (influencer / @buildtomade), and Lauryn Pritchard (influencer / @lldrifts).

The invite-only event occurred at Chef Dance on Main Street in Park City, Utah.

Skilled works to address misperceptions that may be preventing more people from entering vital trade careers. These misperceptions could be attributed to a limited understanding of the job opportunities included in these fields and the benefits these professions offer. By highlighting four tradespeople, Skilled showcases the diversity and breadth of trade jobs, and how workers can find personal fulfillment and professional success. The talented workers highlighted in the film include:

  • Paige Knowles, a 20-year-old plumber and author of the children’s book “Plumber Paige,” who hosts a unique, all-girls construction camp during the summer.

  • Cedric Smith, a welder who attended technical school is driven, committed and passionate about his profession.

  • Anni Martinez is a gaffer at Amazonas Electricas, an all-female grip and electrical team bringing diversity to Mexico’s film industry. The turning point of her career was working on the lighting team for the James Bond film Spectre, which filmed in Mexico.

  • Andrea Martin, a fall protection specialist at 3M, who was named one of the 2022 Top Women in Safety by Canadian Occupational Safety.

Skilled is directed by documentary filmmaker Julio Palacio and produced by Christine Arena (Let Science Speak, Not the Science Type). Produced by 3M and Generous Films, the documentary aims to spark a deeper conversation about the realities of the skilled trades and address the image problem that discourages the younger generation from pursuing them.

The film is available now at 3M.com/Skilled and YouTube.com/3M and will be released wide on VOD in Spring 2023.
