International Women’s Day is an opportunity to shine a light on problems facing women around the world, be they as dire as femicide or as widespread as income disparity. Currently, many groups also use this day to celebrate female achievements in different fields. The origins of International Women’s Day were not celebratory. They can be traced back to a 1909 garment workers’ strike in New York and to the fact that a sizable amount of female workers later lost their lives in a fire. What will be a cause for celebration is a time when there is parity for women on a professional level and also in day-to-day life.
