Taylor Sheridan’s Latest TV Series Delves Into the Oil Industry
By Gilda Baum-Lappe and Sandy Rodriguez
At a star-studded Los Angeles premiere, Landman, the latest TV series from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, made a powerful debut at Paramount Studios. Set against the high-stakes backdrop of Texas’s oil boomtowns, Landman combines intense drama, violence, humor, and heart. The story plunges viewers into a world of risk and reward, exploring the complex lives of everyone from roughneck oil workers to billionaires.
Following the screening of the first episode, cast members took the stage for an engaging Q&A session. Standout moments came from Billy Bob Thornton, Ali Larter, Michael Peña, Demi Moore, and others. Moore turned heads in a striking black McQueen gown, while Thornton, who stars in the series, shared his thoughts with the crowd. He mentioned that the project initially reminded him of the classic film Giant, starring Rock Hudson, James Dean, and Elizabeth Taylor, but he believes Landman is even more intense, dangerous, and humorous.
After the screening, the premiere party embraced a Western theme, complete with cowboy hats and boots. Yet it was the TV show itself that stole the night, leaving audiences eager for its official launch on Paramount+.
Golden Globes judge Gilda Baum-Lappe and Heart of Hollywood Magazine editor Sandy Rodriguez attended the event and share their unique perspectives on this exciting series, which is currently available to stream.
Who would you recommend this show to, and why?
Gilda: Landman is very likable and easy to recommend! I’d suggest it to fans of character-driven dramas that tackle timely issues like corporate greed and the human impact of the energy industry. It would especially appeal to those who appreciate morally complex protagonists and layered storytelling, such as the kind you find on Yellowstone or Succession. The show offers a compelling look at the oil industry and its ethical dilemmas. And, of course, fans of the fantastic cast will love it!
Sandy: I’d recommend this show to anyone who can handle gritty, sometimes violent scenes. That said, the series includes several humorous moments to balance out the drama, which viewers with a sense of humor will appreciate.
What was one of the most powerful scenes, in your opinion?
Gilda: The most powerful scenes are those where characters confront their personal ethics versus professional ambition. For example, any scene where Billy Bob Thornton’s character must make a pivotal decision impacting both the environment and his relationships stands out. Scenes depicting the physical and emotional toll on workers are also incredibly impactful.
Sandy: The very first and last scenes in the pilot episode are shocking and memorable. Without giving away any spoilers, both highlight the immense risks faced daily by different types of fortune seekers in the oil industry, regardless of their position on the totem pole.
What did you like most about the series?
Gilda: Landman excels at creating a morally gray atmosphere, blending high-stakes drama with an unflinching look at an industry that shapes modern life. The writing and pacing are strong, and the cinematography beautifully captures the vast, rugged landscapes of Fort Worth, Texas. The contrast between the region’s rich oil history and its harsh industrial settings is particularly striking.
Sandy: While oil itself isn’t a subject that typically interests me, the show is fascinating. Yes, it focuses on that industry, but it also takes a deep look at the people involved. The characters are extremely well-developed, and you get to see their challenges as they deal with family, exes, coworkers, and friends. I loved the “upstairs/downstairs” style of storytelling that highlights the contrasts between the lives of the wealthy and the working class.
What did you think of Billy Bob Thornton’s performance?
Gilda: Billy Bob Thornton is known for his grounded yet charismatic portrayals of morally ambiguous characters, and his performance in Landman is no exception. He balances charm, ruthlessness, and vulnerability, making his character relatable yet flawed—a definite standout. Having enjoyed his roles in Fargo and Goliath, I find his magnetic presence just as compelling here.
Sandy: Thornton was born to play Tommy Norris, the show’s main character. He brings his signature blend of anger, darkness, confidence, and humor to the role. But in Landman, we also see a softer side, such as when Tommy interacts lovingly and patiently with his daughter.
The young actors playing Tommy’s children also impressed me. Jacob Lofland portrays a former college kid struggling to adapt to life in the oil fields, while Michelle Randolph plays Tommy’s seemingly wild teenage daughter, who is sweet and vulnerable underneath. My favorite character, though, is Tommy’s ex-wife Angela, played by Ali Larter. Their hilarious interactions as a divorced, co-parenting couple are a highlight.
How did the first episode leave you feeling?
Gilda: As with most Taylor Sheridan series, the first episode of Landman establishes tension and intrigue, introducing moral conflicts, key players, and a suspenseful tone. It left me eager to see how the characters navigate their high-stakes world.
Sandy: I’m excited to see more episodes! During the Q&A, Billy Bob Thornton mentioned that we should’ve seen two episodes instead of just one, and I agree. The cliffhanger at the end left me wanting more. Giving us just a taste of the drama to come was a smart move—it definitely motivated me to check out the series on Paramount+.
