Tips For Staying Hydrated During Hot Summer Days

By Batista Gremaud

Water is essential for our bodies to function properly. Every cell, tissue, and organ needs water to work correctly. That's why staying hydrated is necessary by drinking enough fluids daily. But what exactly is the best fluid to drink?

Water is the best and most natural option. But sometimes, switching things up by trying different types of beverages makes things more exciting and easier to manage.

If you're looking for a healthy substitution for water, here are some options:

1. Vegetable juices: Juices are a great way to add more vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Just be sure to choose 100% fruit or vegetable juices with no added sugar.

Caution: Fruit juices can add many calories to your daily count!

2. Coconut water: Coconut water is a refreshing and hydrating beverage with low calories. It's a good source of electrolytes, which can be helpful if you're working out or sweating a lot.

3. Herbal tea: Herbal teas are a great way to stay hydrated and enjoy a soothing cup of tea at the same time. They're also a good source of antioxidants. Check the labels to ensure they don't contain caffeine or added sugar. The best solution is to make it fresh.

4. Milk: Milk is a good source of calcium, potassium, and other nutrients source. It can also help you feel fuller for longer. Just be sure to choose low-fat or skim milk to keep it healthy. If you are lactose intolerant, soy and almond milk are tasty alternatives.

5. Sparkling water: Sparkling water is a fun and refreshing alternative to plain water. Check the label to ensure it contains no added sugar or artificial sweeteners.

There are many ways to make plain water more enjoyable. You can add flavor by infusing iced fruits or adding slices of lemons, lime, and strawberries. You can also prehydrate by starting your day with a large glass of water instead of coffee or tea. Try drinking a glass of water instead whenever you crave something sweet or salty.

Eat For Hydration

In addition to drinking plenty of water, one of the best ways to stay hydrated is to eat foods high in water, such as raw fruits and vegetables. For example, watermelons, strawberries, celery, cucumbers, and spinach, are excellent water sources. Eating these foods helps to keep the body's fluids balanced and can help keep you feeling energized and refreshed.

You can also stay hydrated by eating foods containing electrolytes, such as bananas, avocados, and raisins. Electrolytes are minerals that help with water absorption, so eating foods high in electrolytes can help replace lost fluids.

Here are three super tasty summer recipes to stay cool, hydrated, and healthy during summertime

1. Watermelon Cucumber Salad: This light, refreshing summer salad is perfect for staying cool and hydrated. Mix two cups of cubed watermelon, one cup of chopped cucumber, one tablespoon of freshly-chopped mint, and two tablespoons of olive oil. Mix everything together and sprinkle some coarse salt over the top. Enjoy chilled!

2. Mango-Avocado Salsa: This zesty salsa contains healthy ingredients and flavor. To make, combine one diced mango, one diced avocado, one diced jalapeño, one diced red onion, one tablespoon of freshly chopped cilantro, one tablespoon of lime juice, and one tablespoon of olive oil. Mix everything together and serve with chips or as a topping for tacos.

3. Coconut-Cucumber Smoothie: This creamy smoothie is a delicious way to boost your hydration levels and keep you cool. Combine one cup of almond milk, coconut milk, chopped cucumber, banana, pitted and peeled date, and a handful of ice cubes. Blend everything together and enjoy.

It's important to remember that staying hydrated is not only about drinking enough water; it's about eating the right foods. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables and electrolyte-containing foods helps you get the hydration you need to stay healthy and energetic.
