Stopped here at the Melrose location for a quick bite. This would fall into the category of a place that I’ve taken for granted. In researching the company I found that there’s more here than meets the eye. There’s a depth and a commitment to quality that gives me a greater appreciation of their varied menu of food, pastries and desserts. On this occasion my guest and I shared the Smoked Salmon Plate and The Caravan Kale Salad. The Salmon Plate was surprisingly good with a nicely toasted bagel and everything that makes smoked salmon enjoyable with cream cheese and capers. The kale salad was a nice compliment with its quinoa, heirloom tomatoes, roasted yam, ricotta cheese and a pomegranate vinaigrette and made us feel as though we’d earned our fruit tart and coffees to finish things off.

After this we were off to the Viper Room 8852 Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069

to hear a heavy metal rock band Inimical Drive in from St Louis. The Viper Room is a pretty intimate club so I was definitely bracing myself for a good sonic massage. Thankfully the mix was more balanced than I thought it would be and the half of earplugs (I split mine with my friend) served their purpose. The group definitely fit the bill of the genre with some wisps of melody thrown in for those who like that sort of thing in their walls of sound. The band has been playing together for almost 20 years and this was reflected in the tightness of their playing. When I looked up their lyrics I found some strong relatable concepts which match the songs energy. (This is how I was first introduced to heavy metal many years ago with a friend showing me the lyrics of Metalica enveloped in their sound.

Afterwards we visited with the band's singer, Joel Colby, who looked as though he’d just run a half marathon. This was understandable due to the fact that his stage delivery included some pretty good stage and speaker stances coupled with enough jumping to justify the solid pair of tennis shoes that he was sporting. Rock on!
